America the Beautiful

 

My photo series titled “America the Beautiful” was inspired by a quote from former First Lady Michelle Obama. She said, “when they go low, we go high”.  This collection of work is how I Go High. 

This collection includes twelve portraits of members of my family.  The collection has been in three exhibitions in 2019 in Tampa, Florida.  My goal is to include additional families as a statement of American unity.

One of the photographs in the collection is called “America”. It is my self-portrait. A viewer of this image can see me as a person of color representing this great country.  I created this piece as a way of claiming my citizenship and my right to the name America.
