In Praise of Life
I love creating ceremonial garments as art. These customs represent how I honor my belief in beauty, grace and love. I design with inviting textures, colors and forms to evoke a visual explosion.
I am inspired by The Egungun culture. The Egungun are the Yoruba people, a West African ethnic group in Nigeria. The Egungun people celebrate by having an annual festival to honor their ancestors. The Egungun Dancers are the most important actors in the festival. The dancers wear customs made of heavy strips of fabric. The dancers twirl around in circles. As they spin the heavy strips fly out creating a blessing breeze that invites the spirits of their ancestors to join them in this glorious praise of life.
