Quit in the window

During the time of the Underground Railroad, enslaved people and abolitionist developed a secret language of symbols. Some people used quilts as communication tools. They would sew symbols onto the quilts to send messages to each other. If enslaved people were running away on the Underground Railroad and they came upon a house with a large quilt in the window, they knew it was a Safe House. A Safe House was a home of an abolitionist. This house was a place where runaway people could rest, get food and directions for their journey to freedom.

In this series I have made quilt art. I have been inspired by the colors of patchwork quilts, the technique of weavings and the textures of raffia .
