Quilt in the window

During the time of the Underground Railroad, enslaved people and Abolitionist created a secret language of symbols. They formed this communication tool to pass information about making their way to freedom. They often sewed symbols on quilts to show travelers which direction to go. If people on the Underground Railroad came upon a house with a large quilt hanging in the front window the quilt meant this house was a safe house. A Safe House was a home of an Abolitionist. This house was a place where people running away from slavery, could rest, get food and directions to continue their journey to freedom.

My series of art is inspired by my desire to honor the people who struggled to free themselves from slavery. My images share weavings, quilt designs and symbols that represent freedom.
